Golden Age 1860's – 1919

Old Fashioned

16

Michter's Small Batch bourbon • Demerara • Angostura bitters

By the 1880s, drinkers were ordering cocktails made in the 'old-fashioned'

manner: spirit, sugar, water and bitters. The name preserved the original

cocktail formula as newer, more elaborate drinks proliferated.

French 75

15

London Dry Gin • Sparkling Wine • Fresh Lemon Juice

Recorded during World War I and later standardized in Harry Craddock's

1930 Savoy Cocktail Book, this sparkling gin sour took its name from the

powerful French 75 mm field gun.

New York sour

18

Bottled in Bond Rye Whiskey • Fresh Lemon Juice • Dry Red Wine

A Whiskey Sour crowned with red wine, the drink appeared under several

names before 'New York Sour' endured. Its layered presentation became

one of the era's most recognizable sour variations.

Prohibition Era 1920 – 1933

Bee's Knees

15

Hayman's London Dry Gin • Fresh Lemon Juice • Honey

A Prohibition-era gin sour whose honeyed balance outlived the familiar

legend that sweeteners merely hid poor-quality liquor. It remains the era's

clearest three-ingredient emblem.

Sidecar

17

Cognac • Ferrand Dry Curacao • Demerara • Fresh Lemon Juice

First recorded in London and Paris sources in the early 1920s, the Sidecar

refined the Brandy Crusta into a spare, modern sour and became a pillar of

the European cocktail canon.

Hotel Nacional

17

Planteray Three Stars • Apricot • Demerara • Lime • Pineapple

Associated with Havana's Hotel Nacional de Cuba and published in the

1930s, this elegant rum drink reflects the flourishing Cuban cocktail culture

visited by American travelers during Prohibition.

Repeal 1934 – 1960

Mai Tai

17

Denizen Merchant's Reserve 8yr Rum • Ferrand Dry Curacao • Orgeat • Demerara • Fresh Lime Juice

Trader Vic's Oakland creation put premium aged rum at the center of tiki.

Its disputed rivalry with Don the Beachcomber is part of the mythology

surrounding America's tropical-drink boom.

Vesper Martini

16

Hayman's London Dry Gin • Vodka • Lillet Blanc

Introduced by Ian Fleming in Casino Royale and ordered by James Bond,

the Vesper fused fiction, luxury branding and Martini culture into one of the

century's most famous literary drinks.

El Diablo

15

Reposado Tequila • Cassis • Fresh Lime Juice • Ginger Beer

First published by Trader Vic as the Mexican El Diablo, the drink paired

tequila with cassis, lime and ginger. It helped establish tequila as a

versatile cocktail base beyond the Margarita.

Dark Ages 1970– 1995

Cosmopolitan

15

Oka Yuzu Vodka • Ferrand Dry Curacao • Fresh Lime Juice • Cranberry Juice

Its authorship has competing claims, but Toby Cecchini's 1988 New York

version became canonical. The drink later defined 1990s cocktail glamour

through Sex and the City.

Amaretto Sour

19

Lazarroni Amaretto • Old Grandad Bottled In Bond  Bourbon• Fresh Lemon Juice • Egg White

Popularized alongside amaretto's international rise, the original

sweet-and-sour version became a defining 1970s drink. Its later

rehabilitation showed how improved balance could rescue a maligned

classic.

The Alley's "Espresso" MArtini

17

Vodka • Coffee Liqueur • Demerara  • Vietnamese Coffee

Dick Bradsell created the drink in London after a guest asked for something

to wake her up. It became the era's most durable marriage of nightclub

energy and serious technique.

Renaissance 1996 – Present

Trinidad Sour

19

Angostura bitters • Rye Whiskey • Orgeat • Fresh Lemon Juice

Giuseppe González's daring bitters-as-base drink overturned the usual role

of cocktail bitters and became a benchmark for adventurous but disciplined

modern bartending.

Paper Plane

17

Straight Kentucky Bourbon • Amaro Nonino • Aperol • Fresh Lemon Juice

Sam Ross developed this equal-parts sour for Chicago's Violet Hour. Its

accessibility, balance and memorable name made it a fixture of the

international craft-cocktail repertoire.

Penicillin

17

Blended Scotch whisky •  Ginger • Honey  • Islay Scotch whisky

Sam Ross created it at Milk & Honey in New York. The drink made smoky

Scotch approachable and became one of the most internationally replicated

cocktails of the 21st century.
